First Class Honours
Stellman
2nd Year, 2022
The Stellman is an intervention on the Steltman chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld. We took the approach of taking and replacing segments of the chair to personify human bones that lie within the structures of chairs. Taking inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s painting, ‘Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue’ using the prominent black structure lines and intertwining them into our chair.
Making Process
Sketchbook
A Timelapse of each day working on the Stellman chair configured into a short video. Using the the techniques of doweling, chiselling and how to use other appropriate workshop tools in the process. Learning a well made jig is your best friend.
Catalogue
The catalogue showcased the work of my second-year class, detailing each group's contributions and roles: Researcher, Curator, and Maker. As the Maker, I also collaborated with a fellow student to recreate the Steltman chair.
Technical Drawings
For the final presentation, we produced a technical drawing with an exploded view. Shadows were depicted with thin lines, and tracing paper with a wood texture indicated the material used.

Steltman
Me and Becca Craig worked together to build and recreate the Original Steltman chair. This helped people understand the difference from the original to the new when all the chairs were sitting together in the installation built later on in the project.

Concept Bored
This poster explains the meaning of the Steltman chair, the build process, and includes quick sketches. The "LLs" symbolise the metal rods, and the box layout represents the construction lines. The top left visualises meanings to clarify word differences.
The chair features three coloured wooden dowels, inspired by Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow." Each group member chose a colour; mine was Red.
Installation
Our year group created an installation to display various chairs, reflecting each group's approach to the Steltman chair brief. Inspired by Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue," the installation was showcased at Gather in the Overgate Shopping Centre, Dundee, for shoppers to view.
